Toshiba Resumes Semiconductor Manufacturing in Thailand
November 16, 2012

Toshiba Corp. announced that the company has reopened its semiconductor manufacturing facility in Pathunthani, Thailand, and began shipments on 14 November 2012, according to the company's news release. The facility, which was devastated by floods in October 2011, is now temporarily restored and handles the assembly and packaging of discrete chips for Smartphones and tablet PCs. Meanwhile, Toshiba is setting up a new facility in Purachinburi in southeastern Thailand, outside flood-prone areas. The new facility is slated to begin operation by the spring of 2013 and will completely replace the Pathunthani facility. The cost of building the new facility had been covered by Toshiba's flood insurance and will not affect its profitability, according to the company.
